Pregnancy-Safe Face Cleanser & Face Wash: The Only Ingredient to Skip

Most face washes are pregnancy-safe — but the acne-fighting ones often hide salicylic or benzoyl peroxide. Here is what is safe to cleanse with, by skin type and brand.

Written by · Last reviewed

Quick answer

A basic face wash is one of the safest steps in your routine — it's on your skin for seconds and rinses off. The catch is that many cleansers are acne cleansers, and those often contain salicylic acid (BHA) or benzoyl peroxide. A rinse-off cleanser with ≤2% salicylic acid is generally considered acceptable by dermatologists, but if you want to be fully conservative, switch to a glycolic, lactic, or azelaic cleanser — or a plain gentle wash — for the pregnancy. Everything else (gel, cream, micellar, oil cleansers) is safe.

The one ingredient to check: salicylic acid / BHA

  • Wash-off cleansers with low-% salicylic acid: most dermatologists consider these fine because contact time and absorption are minimal. ACOG's concern is with oral salicylates and high-dose leave-on products.
  • If you'd rather avoid it entirely, that's a completely reasonable choice — the alternatives below work just as well for acne.
  • Benzoyl peroxide wash: limited data; considered "probably okay" in small areas by many OBs, but again, easy to swap. Read our pregnancy acne treatments guide for the full breakdown.

Routine tips

1. Cleanse twice a day, max — over-washing worsens pregnancy dryness

2. Lukewarm water, not hot

3. Double-cleanse only if you wear makeup or SPF (oil cleanser then gentle wash)

4. Skip physical scrubs with sharp particles if your skin is reactive right now

5. Follow with a [pregnancy-safe moisturizer](/blog/pregnancy-safe-moisturizer-and-face-cream) while skin is damp

FAQ

Is CeraVe SA (salicylic acid) cleanser safe in pregnancy?

It's a low-percentage, wash-off salicylic acid, which most dermatologists consider acceptable. If you'd rather avoid BHA entirely, use CeraVe's plain Hydrating or Foaming cleanser instead.

Can I use a benzoyl peroxide wash for breakouts?

Small-area, short-contact use is considered low-risk by many providers, but swapping to azelaic acid is the easy, well-supported alternative.

Is micellar water safe?

Yes. It's just mild surfactants in water — perfectly fine.

My skin is suddenly oily and breaking out — what cleanser?

A gentle foaming cleanser plus an azelaic acid or niacinamide product handles hormonal pregnancy acne without the ingredients you'd want to avoid.
