Pregnancy-Safe Makeup: 12 Ingredients to Check on the Label
Makeup is a grey zone in pregnancy safety conversations — here's what to watch for in foundation, lipstick, mascara, and more.

Why makeup gets less attention than skincare
Most pregnancy skincare guides obsess over retinol and salicylic acid. Makeup? Crickets. But foundation sits on your skin all day, lipstick gets ingested (yes, really — you eat several lipsticks in a lifetime), and some fragrance compounds show up on most endocrine-disruptor watchlists.
The good news: most modern makeup from reputable brands is pregnancy-safe. You just need to check for a dozen specific ingredients.
The 12 ingredients to check on makeup labels
1. ❌ Retinyl palmitate
Ester form of retinol. Common in anti-aging foundations, tinted moisturisers, and some lip products. Avoid. See our retinol guide.
2. ❌ Hydroquinone
Skin-lightening agent banned in EU cosmetics, restricted in other regions. Sometimes appears in "color-correcting" foundations. Avoid.
3. ⚠️ Phthalates (DBP, DEP, DEHP)
Sometimes listed as "fragrance." Associated with endocrine disruption and reproductive concerns. Prefer phthalate-free products.
4. ⚠️ Formaldehyde releasers
DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea. Preservatives that release formaldehyde. Prefer alternative preservatives (phenoxyethanol, potassium sorbate).
5. ⚠️ Parabens (propyl and butyl)
Weak endocrine activity in some studies. Short-chain parabens (methyl, ethyl) have better safety data; long-chain (propyl, butyl) are the ones to skip. Not a hard "avoid" — a "reduce."
6. ⚠️ High-dose salicylic acid
Common in blemish-covering concealers and foundations marketed for acne-prone skin. At standard cosmetic concentrations (<2%), generally safe — but see our salicylic acid pregnancy guide.
7. ⚠️ Hydroxymethyl-3-pentyl cyclohexene carboxaldehyde (Lyral)
Banned fragrance allergen. Modern EU products shouldn't contain it.
8. ⚠️ Lead contaminants in lipstick
Lead is a contaminant, not an added ingredient. Choose lipsticks from brands that publish heavy-metal testing results.
9. ⚠️ Carbon black (D&C Black No. 2) in eye makeup
The US FDA restricts its use in eye products; EU allows it. If you're in the US, it shouldn't be in your mascara. If you're elsewhere, check.
10. ✅ Safe: Iron oxides
The pigments used in most mineral makeup. Pregnancy-safe.
11. ✅ Safe: Mica
Unless ethically sourced matters to you (another topic), mica is pregnancy-safe.
12. ✅ Safe: Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide
Same as in mineral sunscreen — physical pigments and SPF filters.

FAQ
Is mineral makeup always pregnancy-safe?
Usually yes. Mineral makeup (iron oxides, zinc, titanium, mica) has a clean pregnancy profile. Check for added actives though (some mineral foundations still contain retinyl palmitate or salicylic acid).
Is it safe to wear lipstick while pregnant?
Yes. Choose brands that publish heavy-metal testing. Avoid "plumping" lip products with high-dose salicylate.
What about "clean beauty" or "non-toxic" makeup?
Those labels are unregulated marketing terms — they don't guarantee pregnancy safety. Check the actual ingredient list.
Should I throw out my current makeup?
Probably not. Scan each product with VeriMom — you'll likely find most is fine.
Is gel nail polish safe during pregnancy?
The polish itself is usually fine. The UV lamp used for curing is not a concern (no UVB). The bigger issue is the inhalation of fumes during application — request ventilation at the salon.
